FAQS

Will the training last?

Training is about what you, as the owner, put into it. That said, I am always a phone call away and will make myself available to solve any issues that pop up.

What tools do I use and why?

As a balance trainer, I do not limit myself to a specific tool set. I will use any and all tools available on the market so long as they provide the response needed to help your dog succeed.  With that said my first approach will always be a positive one. This means treats, food, praise and affection. This however will not work for most dogs so a tool will be introduced. The most common of these tools will be a prong collar. This tool will apply even pressure around the neck, providing a humane, easy to understand line of communication from the leash to your dog. This compared to a flat collar, which puts majority of the pressure on the trachea, causing damage.

What are the four quadrants of dog training?

The four quadrants are part of the Operant Conditioning Theory. The quadrants are Positive Reinforcement, Positive Punishment, Negative Reinforcement, and Negative Punishment. What do you think of when you read “Positive” and “Negative”? Good and bad is the first thing that comes to mind. In this context however that would be incorrect. In Operant Conditioning, “Positive” is considered adding and “Negative” is subtracting or taking away. “Reinforcement” is pretty straight forward and means trying to increase the frequency of a desired behavior. Lastly, “Punishment” is a consequence that is aimed at decreasing the likelihood of a behavior happening again in the future. Some trainers may choose to limit themselves to certain training quadrants, such as a positive reinforcement trainer who only uses a single quadrant. This shows a dog only a fraction of what it needs to know in order to succeed. Here at Guiding Canines, we use all four quadrants to clearly communicate to your pooch.

Do you provide Board & Trains?

Yes, we do! You will find the link under "Our Services" at the top of the page. Our Board & Train program is four weeks long.

Can I book your services online?

Yes! If you are new, you will need to book a FREE consultation. I feel this service is not something you should throw money at and hope it fixes the problem. We need to discuss your issues and ensure that the training I provide is a good fit for your dog. Most companies want to use advertising to get your hard-earned dollar. I know what that money means and how hard you had to work to earn it. When you spend your money on training at Guiding Canines, I want to ensure it is well spent.
